Court Theatre, located at 5535 S. Ellis Avenue in Chicago, presents East Texas Hot Links, a masterful play written by Eugene Lee and brought to life by the exceptional direction of Resident Artist Ron OJ Parson. The production runs now through September 29, 2024.
It’s 1955, and in the back woods of East Texas sits a hole in the wall run by Charlesetta Simpkins (AnJi White). The once bustling business is now inhabited by a few regulars who seem to be struggling, all except businessman Columbus Frye (Alfred Wilson). Among the customers is smooth-talking Roy Moore (Kelvin Roston, Jr.), whose main objective is to conquer the affections of Charlesetta. XL Dancer (Juwan Lockett), the peculiar bother-in-law of Columbus, is the subject of scrutiny. As they discuss the town’s mysterious deaths of young black men, all but XL seem phased.
Blindman Adolph, a drunken philosopher who speaks truth and his wisdom runs deep, and Delmus Green, a young man with aspirations, are among the regulars. Delmus is in love with a young girl from across town, but his desire for her and a better life in Houston could put him in danger.
Once Buckshot (Geno Walker) strolls through the doors, it becomes apparent why Roy does not stand a chance with Charlesetta. Buckshot is one of the town’s most feared men. Call him Titty Baby, and you’ll find out why.
They all watch and ponder why young Delmus continues to run back and forth, attempting to make a phone call. When the town reader, Boochie Reed (A.C Smith), enters the bar, there is a shift in the room. Suddenly, a dark force looms, and when Boochie reads Delmus’ palm, it reveals that danger is vastly approaching. Things become tense once everyone realizes that the dark cloud that plagues the town has much to do with XL.
The play delves into profound themes of racism, a broken community, and the struggle for a better life. After a series of revelations, the group bands together to save Delmus’s life and decides that the only way to stop the town’s troubles is to eliminate XL. As the story unfolds, it will leave you utterly shocked.
Ron OJ Parson does a fantastic job directing. The actors have a chemistry that helps breathe life into the work of Playwright Eugene Lee. The creative team created a visually captivating set and an exhilarating production that will cause your heart to drop.
There is so much I want to say, but I don’t want to give away too much of the story line. I will say that you will experience a roller coaster of emotions, from laughter, to anger, and then tears. East Texas Hot Links is my favorite production so far this year. I highly recommend it. Everything about this production, from the direction to the acting, was executed with excellence.
